Women and youth political empowerment in Chad

Following the death of President Idriss Déby in 2021 while fighting armed groups, a military council appointed his son, Mahamat Idriss Déby, to replace him, who, following a tense and violent political transition was elected President in May 2024.

Laure-Hélène Piron, TPP Director, is undertaking a political economy analysis for the British Embassy in N'Djamena together with Chadian gender expert Colette Benoudji. It provides advice on how the Embassy can promote the political inclusion and participation of women and youth in the post-political transition context. The analysis makes use of the Women's Political Empowerment toolkit which Laure-Hélène helped develop in 2024.

The project is being delivered through the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office's Democratic Governance Centre of Expertise which is managed by the Westminster Foundation for Democracy.
